Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the
Islamic Republic of Pakistan
Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar is the 4th
Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan and 39th Foreign Minister. He is also
Leader of the House in the Senate of Pakistan. Senator Dar also serves
on a number of Constitutional and Cabinet committees: Chairman of
Cabinet Committee on Privatization, Member of the Council of Common
Interest, Member of the Cabinet Committee on Chinese Investment
Projects, and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee to Oversee Outsourcing
of Airports in Pakistan.
Senator Dar previously served four times
as Finance Minister of Pakistan: 1998-1999, 2008, 2013-2017, and
2002-2023. He has held also important high public offices including:
Chief Executive/Minister of State, Pakistan Investment Board 1992-93;
Minister for Commerce & Investment 1997-99; Deputy Chairman of the
Constitutional Implementation Commission 2010-11.
Senator Dar is a member of Pakistan
Muslim League-N and joined politics in mid 1980s. He has served twice as
Member of the National Assembly: 1993-96 and 1997-99 and its his fifth
term as Member of the Senate of Pakistan: 2003-06, 2006-12, 2012-18,
2018-24 and 2024-30. At the Senate, he has served in the past both as
Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the House. He was also Chairman
of the Parliamentary Electoral Reforms Committee which consolidated and
reformed the different election laws in Pakistan and finalized the draft
Election Act 2017.
Before joining active politics, Senator
Dar worked as Finance Director 1974-76 in England, as Senior Auditor
1976-77 in Africa, as Financial Advisor 1978-87 of a multi-national
company, as Chairman/CEO of Non-Banking Financial Institution 1988-92
in Pakistan and as Financial Advisor 2002-08 in Middle East. He has been
at different times an ex-officio Governor on the Boards of World Bank,
Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank and Asian
Infrastructure Investment Bank in the last 25 years.
Senator Dar is a former President of the
Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry 1993 and currently he is
President of the Old Ravians Association.
After under-graduating from Government
College University, Lahore, Mr. Dar graduated in 1969 from the
University of Punjab in B.Com. Hons, securing first position in Punjab
and was awarded two Gold Medals and a Roll of Honor. Later, he qualified
as a Professional Chartered Accountant in 1974 from the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He became Associated
Member in 1975 of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan
(ICAP). Currently, he is Fellow Member of both the ICAEW and the ICAP as
well as the Council Member of the later.
Senator Dar and his family patronizes
two Charitable Organizations, M/S Hajveri Trust and M/S Hajveri
Foundation since 2004-05 without any public donations.
In recognition of his commendable
national parliamentary services, Senator Dar was decorated with the
Nishan-e-Imtiaz (NI) in 2011 by the President of Pakistan.
He is married with four children.
